The Innocent Start to a Serious Addiction- A Look at Ambien Addiction
Ambien is a type of sleep aid. It is a Schedule IV controlled substance which is available in both five and ten milligram tablets. Ambien addiction can sneak up on you innocently and unsuspecting. A person has trouble falling asleep one night. They try other traditional methods to help them sleep such as drinking warm milk but it does not work. The next night they have trouble getting to sleep again. Before long their lack of sleep is affecting their day-to-day life and they realize they must do something. But what do they do?
Many people turn to sleeping pills to give them the opportunity to rest. What might start out as an occasional pill to help you sleep can turn into an addiction to Ambien that is hard to break.
Also sometimes called Zolpidem, Ambien is a drug that is meant to be used for a few days at a time and no more. Even if it is used for a period of two weeks it is generally safe but anymore than this is considered inappropriate and misuse. This drug puts a person to sleep in as little as 15 minutes.
Abuse of Ambien
When does the use of Ambien turn into abuse of the drug? If a person takes more than the recommended dose for a matter of a number of weeks (which means taking more than 10 mg) this can lead to tolerance building up in the user’s system. Just like other types of drug addictions, the person then needs to take more of the drug to get the same effect. This can be made even worse if the person combines the Ambien with another substance such as consuming alcohol. This leads to a deepening of the intensity of the combined drugs.
Those who develop an Ambien addiction will take the drug orally. Some may crush it and then snort it like cocaine while others may cook it and then introduce it into their bodies intravenously.
Drug addictions of all sorts, including Ambien addiction are serious and can lead to an array of life threatening health conditions and other problems. If you suspect that someone you know is abusing Ambien, get them help as soon as possible.
